GLOBAL ONLINE JAM KICKS OFF THIS WEEKEND

Commemorating the launch of "urban America's answer to MTV", New York-based new media company Virtual Melanin Inc. links up with its British corporate cousins Digital Diaspora for DIGITAL SLAM 2 - a three day online music festival spanning from London and Cape Town, South Africa to San Francisco and New York September 21-23rd on the World Wide Web. Pioneered by Digital Diaspora founder Marc Boothe, the event kicks off from London-based nightclub Dingwalls and features performances by Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid and video artist Darryl Hell in New York. The London component showcases spoken word artists The Blank States, Anthony Joseph, T-Kalla and Sonia Sohn. Other performers include A Guy Called Gerald and MIDI saxophonist Steve Williamson. Fusing elements of drum 'n' bass, hip-hop, jungle, ambient dub and African beats to create abstract soundscapes, Digital Diaspora will be collaborating with leading DJ's and musicians to take 'live' multi-media performance to a new level. The global gig will be link via ISDN lines carrying video and audio signals to explore the 'cut and mix' of contemporary urban culture and on-line collaborations by artists at the edge of leading multi-media technology performing simultaneously between the four major cities.

Spring Heel Jack's Ashley Wales and John Coxon are way ahead of the curve. At a moment when new U2 and Bowie releases are rushing to embrace the sound of the electronic, these two Londoners are already subverting it. A Guy Called Gerald

Dans le monde mouvant d'une techno de plus en plus multiforme, Gerald Simpson alias A Guy Called Gerald, est une valeur sûre. Ce jeune black de Manchester a pondu un premier hit house en 1987 déjà: <<VoodooRay.» En 1992, dégoûté par l'insitance de son label Sony, à lui faire enregistrer des hits house à la chaîne, il fonde son propre label Juice Box Records, afin de pouvoir continuer ses recherches dans la dance underground électronique.

Ainsi, il lance une jungle/reggae hybride en 1993 avec «28 Gun Badboy» et lapremière productiond'ambientjungle en 1995.

Aujourd'hui, il continue à être programmé dans les clubs du monde entier et est appelé à remixer des artistes très
différents: que ce soit Flora Purim, ou très récemment David Bowie. (acr)

"Opener Jeru Tha Damaja was off the tour. His sole replacement was a DJ who spun hip-hop and then later, house and jungle beats. At 10:20pm, the lights lowered and a Bowie-sounding track I had never heard ("I danced myself out of the room") was followed by a cut off of Snoop Doggy Dogg's latest album. Tricky, trailed by a bassist, keyboardist, guitarist, drummer and Martina, entered to a whoop of anticipation."

Although this review (from the Phoenix New Times on 30th January 1997) suggests he did!:

"Dozens turned away at the door chilled in the concrete mini-park of Hayden Square, checking out A Guy Called Gerald spin hip-hop beats through the open club doors and hungrily eying the will-call line for anyone with a connection that might get them inside. "

"Then, after appearing with Tricky in New York City, lead-off act Jeru the Damaja, profiled in last week's issue, vanished from the bill; speaking in Addicted to Noise, an on-line publication, Tricky chalked up his departure to "politics." Whatever the actual reason, the throng at the Fox (a mixture of Boulder-y intellectuals, local trendsetters and white hip-hop kids clad in rag-tag fashions cribbed from Yo! MTV Raps) went from looking forward to the concert opener to having none at all. Prior to the show's start, a DJ spun tracks by the Wu Tang Clan and Snoop Doggy Dogg--music that's estimable but painfully obvious. Listening to it, one couldn't help but fear that Tricky, whose brilliant recordings are tangled and ornate, would wind up doing karaoke versions of his best pieces a la far too many of his rap peers."

"Say hello to the 28-year-old trip-hop star Tricky who just about executed that maneuver before a packed house at Avalon. Here's the skinny: Opening act Jeru the Damaja was booted off the bill after a recent New York show, leaving DJ A Guy Called Gerald and Tricky to fill all the hours. Prior to the set, the mercurial Brit informed (warned?) his Avalon hosts that his show could range anywhere from 45 minutes to three hours. We beat feet at the two-hour mark to make a prior engagement, and we did not fear we missed the Second Coming. As we exited, Tricky was mired in a lazy, near-ambient groove that one stagehand aptly termed "just like the Grateful Dead with way more bass." "
